“My aim is to convey history to my sons. I want them to be able to experience history and understand its meaning for the present." - Director Ondrej Trojan
This historical drama explores the contradictory and complex life of ‘Czech Schindler’ Zdenek Toman. An unsavory politician and dubious entrepreneur, Toman was a controversial figure who nevertheless helped save the lives of hundreds of Eastern European Jews. Born Zoltán Goldberger, Toman was an unscrupulous careerist who worked his way up to head of Foreign Intelligence in post-war Czechoslovakia. He ran the secret police and helped the communist party to seize power. Imprisoned and condemned to death for fear that he would spill state secrets, Toman managed to escape to Venezuela, never to return to his home country.
