In October 1947, the ‘Black Book’, a collection of testimonies and articles about the murder of over two million Jews under Nazi occupation in the Soviet Union, was to be published in Moscow. But the book was shelved by the authorities, as if the Holocaust of Soviet Jews had never occurred at all. Deftly mixing animation, archival footage and contemporary interviews, The Mystery is the Black Book considers the history of Soviet Jewry, and the legacy of Stalin’s decision to hide documented evidence of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union.
