Can a modern democracy impose a prolonged military occupation on another group of people while still retaining its core democratic values?
The Law In These Parts is Ra’anan Alexandrowicz’s award-winning – and, some may say, contentious – documentary on the justice system of Israeli-occupied territories.
Since Israel conquered the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 war, the military has imposed thousands of orders and laws, established military courts, sentenced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, enabled half a million Israeli ‘settlers’ to move into the area, and developed a system of long-term jurisdiction by an occupying army that is unique in this world.
The men entrusted with creating this new legal framework were the members of Israel’s military legal corps. In this documentary, we discover an unprecedented and little-known story through personal testimonies from the actual military legal professionals who crafted the system and helped reinforce it in its formative years.
“This is a superbly thoughtful film about order and justice, 'which do not always go hand in hand'..." Israelfilm.blogspot
