Curious George is an international icon, with generations of children growing up with stories of his adventures and hijinks. The friendly and inquisitive monkey was created by Hans and Margret Rey; German Jews with their own incredible stories. A dreamer, Hans was always sketching whatever came to his mind. Margret was an entrepreneurial rebel, determined to make her mark on the world. The two married in Brazil and honeymooned in Paris. Four years later, when the Nazis encroached on the edges of the city, they fled on bicycles with a precious manuscript featuring a small monkey and his beloved friend, the Man in the Yellow Hat.
Seamlessly incorporating animation that brings Hans and Margret to life, Ema Ryan Yamazaki’s debut documentary charts the creation and journey of Curious George, and celebrates the Reys’ extraordinary creative collaboration amidst the chaos of a world at war.
