After a young seamstress is found dead in a small village on Easter Sunday 1899, the absence of blood at the crime scene leads investigators to believe that the murder was part of a Passover ritual. Pinning the blame on Leopold Hilsner, a young Jewish beggar, his trial and subsequent death sentence incite riots against Jews. Finally, Tomas Masaryk, a professor of sociology in Prague (and eventual president of Czechoslovakia) intervenes; with dramatic consequence.
